  3. In 1998 Clifford Wolf created ROCK Linux [1], a great shell-based
  4. 'Distribution Build Kit' to help system administrators create and
  5. maintain their own Linux distributions.
  6. In 2004, René Rebe made his second (the first was named dROCK) fork
  7. due to an (in the view of some developers) inconvenient development
  8. cycle [2]. This fork with the temporary code name 'T2' [3] finally
  9. turned into the T2-Project [4]. The goal of T2 was to decentralize the
  10. development and revive the almost stalled ROCK-Linux development.
  11. It reworked the 'Distribution Build Kit' into 'System Development
  12. Environment' (SDE) to decouple it from the 'Distribution' concept
  13. which is strongly linked to the Linux Kernel.
  14. In May 2006 OpenSDE [5] was born, aimed at the reimplementation of the
  15. build engine which should result in a more efficient and flexible
  16. framework and lower the entry level for users as well as
  17. developers. OpenSDE, then two months later, after personal and many
  18. technical differences, was detached into its own project by
  19. Alejandro Mery, supported by T2 as well as former ROCK-Linux
  20. developers.
  21. The SDE concept is intended as an open framework to build an operating
  22. system (not necessarily restricted to GNU/Linux) enabling the creation
  23. of systems for diverse architectures with various boot options and a
  24. tailored software selection.
  25. OpenSDE has now turned into an ambitious purely team-lead project
  26. where decisions are made based on their technical merit uninfluenced
  27. by its predecessors and contribution are judged by their quality and
  28. security.
